Hyperpozition is a website. Gravity Engine is an art project, and both belong to me, Jason Murphy, a writer and artist based in Canada. The following describes the latest series of works of the Gravity Engine project, a series entitled Phenom:
I travel. I write.
I transform some of what I write via the use of a Java applet that I have made with the help of Claude.ai.
A Java applet that generates a loose set of instructions.
I utilize those instructions to make a sketch. A sketch that references a specific custom grid.
I utilize the sketch to render the finished art using Adobe Illustrator.
I have each piece printed out at scale, at archive quality, on good paper.
There is more to say about what the work means for anyone who cares to hear.
Some of the meaning has to do with the place or places in which the source text or journal entry was made. Some of the meaning has to do with language and perception. The-all meaning is embedded and then deconstructed. Is collected at, and then flys apart subsequent to, the moment.
The title of each piece describes the more-or-less precise moment of the source text.
Writ large, Gravity Engine is a project dedicated to the idea that we not only communicate but also simultaneously fail to communicate by some amount. That for every attempt to establish meaning inevitably some meaning is lost to the universe—thrown off like some invisible particle—resulting in billions of particles of lost meaning left to accumulate. Further, that it might be possible to represent this lost meaning in some way, not convey it but account for it, via abstract forms emerging (generated algorithmically) from the original attempted act of communication. Some but not all of this work has unexpectedly aligned with my project of the last eight years to better understand and communicate solutions to the environmental crisis, resulting in works addressing conservation and the debt of meaning in the universe generated by biodiversity loss. In every case the work represents the simultaneous perception and deconstruction of some moment, being, or situation.
